Our Strategy
Overview: Our strategy to address the reading deficiency of K-5 students, support multi-language students, and students who are on or above grade level has three parts:
- focusing on Balanced Literacy,
- sustaining what the child's teacher has already taught in the classroom,
- and using visual aids and ESL certified teachers for children who are learning English as a second language.
The tutor will meet with the student over Zoom for 30-minute sessions, four days a week during the school year, and for four weeks during summer vacation.
How it Works: During the Zoom sessions, the teacher/tutors will focus on phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Because the students may have already fallen behind, we will provide them with intense, systematic, and explicit instruction on phonics, blending letters, and blending words.
To help the students hear and identify sounds in words, students will generate rhymes, and isolate, blend, and manipulate words on several different levels.
To improve fluency and accuracy when reading, the teacher/tutor will model fluent reading before having the students read the text.
After modeling and adequate demonstration, the students will practice repeated reading to have more opportunities to practice reading with a high degree of success.
The teacher will also introduce new vocabulary before giving the students a new text to help with understanding and defining their new words.
To determine if the word is new, the teacher will review certain words beforehand to determine which words are unfamiliar to them. The words will be defined and discussed.
To improve comprehension, the teacher will use graphic organizers to help students focus on concepts and stay focused on the task in front of them. To ensure that the students remain engaged, the sessions will last for 30 minutes.
After the session, the tutor will grade assessments, develop individualized lessons for the next session with each student, and create a session report. In the session report, the teacher will document what the student practiced during the session, what the student struggled to learn, and what the student mastered during the session.
The session report will be emailed to the students' parents and classroom teacher(s). The parents and classroom teachers will also receive pa copy of the practice materials used during that session with the student.
Billing the Sessions: The teacher will work 1-on-1 with the student for four sessions (2 hours) per week. The family will be billed $80 per week, for a minimum of four weeks.
Assessments: It’s important to monitor the progress of the students. Each student will begin with a diagnostic test using RENESSANCE'S STAR EARLY LITERACY, STAR CBM READING, AND STAR READING. These computer-based assessments are easy to administer and can be completed in less than 15 minutes.
